MINNESOTA'S DOUBLES TEAMS WIN AT REGION IV CHAMPIONSHIPS
Both Minnesota doubles teams captured wins at the Omni Hotels Region IV Championships in Madison, Wis., in first round action of Main Draw Doubles play. They will advance to the second round of the tournament and will play tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. The tournament runs through Tuesday.
The doubles team of Valerie Vladea (Kitchener, Ontario/Burlington Central) and Michaela Havelkova (Liberec, Czech Republic/Gymnazium F.X. Saldy) defeated Butler's Pedro/Steiner by a score of 8-4. They will face Castro/Adams of Ohio State at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
On the same note, seniors Amy Thomas (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and her partner Andrea Rose (North Vancouver, British Columbia/ Handsworth) advanced to the second round after they beat Caldemeyer/ Thomas of Michigan State, 8-5. They play at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow against Mues/Vojnov from Wisconsin.
In qualifying singles action, Brandi Watts (Monument, Colo./Lewis- Palmer) was defeated by Notre Dame's Sarah Jane Connelly 6-0, 6-3. In order to advance to the Main Draw Singles, a player must win the qualifying singles championship.
AGATE: Havelkova/Vladea def. Steiner/Pedro, Butler, 8-4; Thomas/Rose def. Caldemeyer/Thomas, Ohio State, 8-5.
Brandi Watts lost to Sarah Jane Connelly, Notre Dame, 6-0, 6-3.
