MINNESOTA'S DOUBLES TEAM ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS

MINNESOTA'S VLADEA/HAVELKOVA ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINAL ROUND OF REGION IV CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Minnesota women's tennis team competed in the third day of competition at the Omni Hotels Region IV Championships in Madison, Wis. The tournament runs through Tuesday, with Main Draw Doubles and Main Draw Singles action continuing tomorrow.
Minnesota's Valerie Vladea (Kitchener, Ontario/Burlington Central) and Michaela Havelkova (Liberec, Czech Republic/Gymnazium F.X. Saldy) won both their doubles matches to advance to the quarterfinal round of play in Main Draw Doubles. Vladea and Havelkova won their first match of the day by a score of 8-2 over Ohio State's Castro and Lindsay Adams. They then advanced to the round of sixteen where they faced Marquette's Anna Pavlovic and Eva Herrera-Tru. Vladea and Havelkova won that match also by a score of 8-2. Tomorrow they will face the Notre Dame's No. 1 seed, Becky Varnum and Lindsey Green at 9:15 a.m.
In singles action, Amy Thomas won her matches for the day. She defeated Kavitha Tiperneni from Michigan by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Thomas then faced Linde Mues from Wisconsin and went on to win that match 6-2, 6-4. Thomas will play tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. against Purdue's Melissa Iqbal.
