MINNESOTA WOMEN'S TENNIS FINISHES PLAY AT REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Minnesota women's tennis team got a win from Valerie Vladea (Kitchener, Ontario/Burlington Central) in the Main Draw Singles Consolation round at the ITA Regional Championships in Madison, Wis.

Vladea faced Wisconsin's Vanessa Rauh today in consolation play after losing yesterday to Monica Rincon from Ohio State. Vladea won that match today by a score of 6-2, 7-6. She then went on to play Frederika Girsang of Western Michigan. Vladea was defeated 7-6, 7-3, 6-3.

The doubles team of Vladea and Michaela Havelkova (Liberec, Czech Republic/Gymnazium F.X. Saldy) competed in quarterfinal round action but could not get the win over the No. 1 seed. Vladea and Havelkova lost to Notre Dame's Becky Varnum and Lindsey Green by a score of 8-5.

The tournament concludes on Monday with the winners of each region, along with at-large and wild card selections, advancing to the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Nov. 8-11, in Farmers Branch, Texas.

AGATE: Singles: Amy Thomas lost to Melissa Iqbal, Purdue, 6-3, 6-3; Michaela Havelkova lost to Marina Parashkevova, 7-6, 5-7, 8-10; Valerie Vladea def. Vanessa Rauh, Wisconsin, 6-2, 7-6; Valerie Vladea lost to Frederika Girsang, 7-6, 7-3, 6-3.

Doubles: Vladea/Havelkova lost to Varnum/Green, Notre Dame, 8-5.
