VLADEA/HAVELKOVA AND ANDERSON/PERRY DUOS WIN BOTH DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

douThe University of Minnesota women's tennis team finished the final day of the Rice Tennis Classic in Houston, Texas, where doubles action saw two championships go in Minnesota's favor. In Flight A doubles competition, sophomore Valerie Vladea and junior Michaela Havelkova won the championship match 8-6 over the Katie Ruckert/Ziva Grasic pair from the University of Texas. Also winning the Flight B Championship was first-year player Cici Anderson and her partner Kelly Perry as they defeated Arkansas State's Magul Cibils/Marusa Pogacnik by a score of 8- 3. It is the first championships Minnesota has claimed during the fall season.

Vladea won the third-place singles Flight A action in a 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 victory over Jeri Gonzales from the host school, Rice. Minnesota grabbed another victory in the Flight A consolation bracket when Havelkova defeated her own teammate junior Amy Thomas 2-6, 7-5, 6-0. Havelkova finished the tournament in ninth place, while Thomas came in 10th out of 16 participants.

In Flight B competition, sophomore Brandi Watts captured fourth- place match after she lost to Rice's Yasmin Fisher 6-3, 6-0, who defeated Perry in the first round on Friday. Perry finished fifth overall winning today's match Julia Searle 6-4, 6-2.

Senior Andrea Rose</ a> finished in fifth place in Flight C competition with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Arkansas State's Jessica Nelson, while Anderson won in the consolation bracket over Alona Breen of Texas Pan- American. Anderson finished 13th out of 16 participants respectively.

Next action for the women's tennis team will be the ITA Regional Qualifier Oct. 27-30.
