GOPHERS TIE BEMIDJI STATE

5-2-2The University of Minnesota women's hockey team gains another point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association-Women's League with a 2-2 tie against the Bemidji State Beavers. Minnesota is now 5-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play. Bemidji State, who is now third in the conference, is 5-1-3, 3-1-3 in the WCHA.

Although Minnesota outshot Bemidji State 14-4 in the first period, the two teams went scoreless in the first 20 minutes of action. The Gophers would be the first to tally a goal at 5:12 of the second period as rookie Kelly Stephens gained her seventh goal of the season. The assists were credited to La Toya Clarke and Kristy Oonincx. The Gophers' goal would not hold the lead for long as the Beavers answered back at 6:07 on a power-play goal to even up the score at 1-1. At 11:47 also in the second, Minnesota would take the lead for the second time in the game as Ronda Curtin took advantage of a power-play goal with the assists going to co-captains Laura Slominski and Tracy Engstrom. The Beavers fought back and scored a power-play goal themselves at 13:29 by Caesare Stimson to take back the game and hold the score at 2-2. The score would remain 2-2 for the rest of the contest. Minnesota outshot Bemidji State 35-18, but were unable to put the puck in the net. Minnesota was 1-5 on the power-play opportunity, while BSU was 2-5. The game marks the fourth straight game that the Gophers have scored a power-play goal. Rookie goalie Brenda Reinen stopped 16 shots on goal, which now puts her at 2-1-2 on the year. BSU's Bre Dedrickson stopped 33 Gopher shots and was named the third star of the game.

The two teams will battle head-to-head again tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. at Mariucci Arena.
