GOLDEN GOPHERS RALLY TO STAY UNBEATEN AT MICHIGAN TECH
11/2/2001 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
In front of 2,555 fans, Michigan Tech took an early lead as Jon Pittis scored at 6:03 in the first period. Five minutes later, Nick Angell broke up a potential two-on-one and Troy Riddle picked the puck up and beat Tech goaltender Brian Rogers over his left shoulder. The tie wouldn't last long as Ryan Lenton's rebounder gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
In the second period, freshman Rob Rankin tallied his first career goal for Michigan Tech to give MTU a two-goal lead. The game would change though as Johnny Pohl's centering pass from behind the goal deflected off a Huskie defender and past Rogers.
The lucky bounce opened the flood gates as Minnesota scored four more goals in a span of just 5:37. Paul Martin, Jeff Taffe, Troy Riddle and Erik Wendell all collected scores.
With a commanding 6-3 lead in the third period, Taffe earned his second goal of the night with 37 seconds to play in the game. For Taffe, his three-point night was his fifth multi-point game in six contests this season.
Adam Hauser moved to 3-0 with the win as he stopped 24 of 27 shots. It was the 63rd of his career and moves him to within one of John Blue who is in second place all-time among Golden Gopher netminders.
Through six games on the season, Minnesota has reached the seven-goal mark six times.
The rematch is set for 7:05 p.m. central time on Saturday night. The game can be heard on WCCO-AM and also at www.gophersports.com.
