The Gophers hung with Stanford until early in the second half when the Cardinal pulled away. Stanford owed a 46-32 lead at halftime but Minnesota scored the first five points of the second half on a three-point play by Janel McCarville and a jumper by Lindsay Whalen to take the deficit into single digits at 46-37. Stanford rebounded with an 11-0 run to take control of the game.
?We showed a lot of character playing against a very good Stanford team tonight,? said Minnesota head coach Brenda Oldfield. ?Every single day, our goal for the season is to get better every time we step out on the court. Regardless of the final score tonight, I was really proud of this basketball team because we never stopped playing but kept hustling and competing until the game was over. If you want to be the best, you have to play the best.?
Minnesota shot 35.7 percent from the floor but forced the ball inside the paint often, resulting in 31 trips to the free throw line, making 22. Stanford built its lead hitting 8-of-19 three-point field goals in the game and converted 39-of-72 field goal attempts for 54.2 percent.
McCarville led the way for the Gophers with 19 points and eight rebounds. Whalen added 13 points. Four Stanford players finished in double figures, led by Nicole Powell with 19.
