GOPHERS DEFEAT SECOND-RANKED DARTMOUTH 3-2 IN OVERTIME

thrill The sixth-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team defeated second-ranked Dartmouth in a 3-2 overtime thriller. The Gophers jump to 9-2-2 overall, while handing the Big Green their first loss of the 2001-02 season at 5-1-0.

Minnesota scored first as Kelly Stephens tallied a short-handed goal at 13:24 of the first period. The Gophers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Jerilyn Glenn scored her second goal in two games at 2:06 in the second. Dartmouth would cut the deficit in half as Cheryl Muranko answered back on a rebound at 10:59 of the second stanza. However, the Gophers would hold the lead after getting outshot 16-8 in the period. In the third, the Big Green pulled goalie Amy Ferguson to put an extra skater on the ice. With the extra player, Dartmouth tied the game at 18:59 to even the score at 2-2. Within 18 seconds of overtime, senior co-captain Tracy Engstrom scored the game-winning goal in the slot to give Minnesota its ninth victory of the season. The Gophers keep the unbeaten streak to seven games, holding a 6-0-1 record.

Rookie goalie Jody Horak had a career-high 43 saves against Dartmouth. In four games played, Horak has a 4-0-0 record. "This was a great win for us," head coach Laura Halldorson said. "Our team keeps finding ways to win games against good teams. I was really proud of their effort and determination."

The Gophers host third-ranked New Hampshire tomorrow at Mariucci Arena. The game has been changed to a 1:05 start instead of the original 2:05 mark.
