GOLDEN GOPHER WRESTLERS WIN ALL 10 TITLES AT NORTHERN OPEN

Senior Leroy Vega captured the 125-pound title, winning by a 7-3 decision over Ben VomBaur of Boise State in the championship match. At 133 pounds, Ryan Lewis took the crown with a 6-0 decision over Jesse Brock of Boise State. Senior Chad Erikson grabbed his second-straight 141-pound title with a 7-1 major decision win over Wisconsin's Grant Hoerr in the title match. Freshman Nick Kirk finished sixth.
At 149 pounds, junior Jared Lawrence and freshman Marcus LeVesseur shared the title as they did not wrestle each other in the championship bout. Lawrence and LeVesseur were also co-champs at the season-opening Bison Open. Junior Luke Becker took the 157-pound crown, downing Adam Turner of Wisconsin in the title match. At 165 pounds, junior John Hardy defeated redshirt freshman teammate Nate Baker 5-2 in the final bout. Redshirt freshman Josh McLay took third place and freshman Jeremy Larson grabbed fifth place.
Sophomore Jacob Volkmann took the 174-pound title, dropping Todd Fuller of North Dakota State 5-0 in the championship match. At 184 pounds, sophomore Damion Hahn captured the crown, defeating Chris Rufo of NDSU 4-1 in the title match.
Senior Owen Elzen took the 197-pound championship, posting a 14-0 major decision on Brian Karemer of NDSU in the title match. Sophomore Eli Ross took fourth place and freshman Chad Mentel grabbed sixth place. Finally, sophomore Garrett Lowney won the heavyweight title, defeating Boe Rushton of Boise State 6-0 in the championship match.
