Minnesota's Asad Abdul-Khaliq scored on a two-yard touchdown run and hit Ben Utecht for a two-point conversion with 1:55 to go in the game, but it wasn't enough as Minnesota (3-5, 1-4 Big Ten) fell to Ohio State today 31-28 at the Metrodome in front of a crowd of 45,407.
Abdul-Khaliq was 11-of-21 for 120 yards and a touchdown. He also threw an interception, but did run for 43 yards on nine carries.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Golden Gophers' Tellis Redmon ran for more than 100 yards.
Redmon, a junior from Grapevine, Texas, ran for 103 yards on 17 carries, including a 52-yard touchdown. In his last seven games, Redmon has averaged 119 yards per contest.
In the first half, All-American receiver Ron Johnson caught a 29 yard pass to give the senior 2,661 receiving yards in his career, setting a new school record and moving him into 10th all-time in the Big Ten. Johnson now has caught a pass in 43 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the nation.
The reception got the Gophers down to the three-yard line and sophomore running back Thomas Tapeh promptly scored on the next play to get the Gophers to 14-10. Dan Nystrom made a 44 yard field goal as the first half ended to make the score 14-13.
Nystrom got the Golden Gophers on the board first hitting a 30 yard field goal to give Minnesota a 3-0 lead with 6:08 in the first quarter.
After the Gophers failed to convert on fourth down at the Buckeye 35 yard line, Ohio State (5-3, 3-2) put together a 10-play, 47 yard drive spanning 5:16 capped by a Mike Nugent field goal to seal the game.
