The Jaguars, a team of former NCAA Division I players, some with WNBA experience, erased a 15-point Gopher lead in the second half. Kim Prince scored a three-point play to give Minnesota a 70-55 lead with 6:13 left to play. Houston rallied with a 16-3 run to chop the deficit to three points at 73-70 with 3:21 remaining.
Lieser halted the Jaguar run with a 14-foot jumper on the left wing at 2:47, then followed with a three-point field goal from the right corner with 1:29 on the clock to put the Gophers back in control. Lindsay Whalen hit three of four free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Two Gophers tallied double-doubles. Prince led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Whalen nearly collected a triple double in the game, scoring 15 points, dishing out 10 assists and hauling down nine rebounds. Lieser chipped in 15 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Von Wald, playing in her first game as a Gopher after transferring from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, came off the bench to contribute 11 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
Minnesota plays the Lithuania Select team in its second exhibition of the season, next Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers open their regular season on Nov. 17-18, when they host the Gopher Basketball Classic.
