GOPHERS FALL 16-0 TO THE U.S. NATIONAL TEAM

The second-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team played in an exhibition game against the U.S. National Team tonight in Grand Forks, N.D. The Gophers fell to Team USA by a score of 16-0, the largest margin against the U.S. National Team.

In the first period of play, the U.S. National Team scored six times against the Golden Gophers to gain a 6-0 lead going into the first intermission. Jenny Potter tallied a goal at 3:19 to start the rally. Minnesota had a power play opportunity, but Tricia Dunn scored a short-handed goal getting passes from Julie Chu and Angela Ruggerio at 5:41. Natalie Darwitz scored two goals in the first stanza, one at 13:52 and again at 18:48. The Gophers were outshot 22-5 in the first period.

Team USA would tack on an additional six goals in the second period to lead 12-0. Potter and Granato would each contribute a goal, posting two goals on the night. Katie King from Team USA would tally two goals in the second period. The U.S. National Team added four additional goals to give Team USA a 16-0 win. King and Carisa Zaban each had a hat trick.

Both rookie goalies saw action against the National Team. Jody Horak started in net for the Gophers and had 29 saves. Brenda Reinen added an additional 12. Former Gopher Courtney Kennedy tallied three assists against her alma mater.

The Gophers, who are ranked second in the nation and hold an 11-2-3 overall record, will finish the two-game series against the U.S. National Team tomorrow in Warroad, Minn. The game is held at The Gardens at 7:30 p.m.
