PENN STATE SHOOTS OUT GOPHERS

turMinnesota Golden Gopher men's basketball team suffered their worse loss of the Monson era at Williams Arena 82-62. Penn State shot 12-of-25 from behind the three-point arc and only committed eight turnovers to lead to their success.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half. Penn State shot 38 percent while Minnesota shot 27 percent. Minnesota whittled a Nittany Lion 11-point lead with 4:33 remaining in the first half to just five points as time wound down. Penn State's Joe Crispin hit a buzzer-beating three-point shot to send the Golden Gophers to the lockerroom down by eight.

There was no comeback to be had for Minnesota in the second half. They cut the lead to five with 15:35 remaining, but could not get any closer. Penn State went on a 20-2 run in the middle of the half to seal the Gophers' fate. The Lions led by 27 with 3:43 remaining in the game. Minnesota head coach Dan Monson pulled the starters and put in the walk-on players who went on a 9-3 run to end the half and push the Gopher deficit to only 20.

Dusty Rychart was the only Golden Gopher in double figures. He scored 22 points, shooting 9-of-13 from the field and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Shane Schilling and Travarus Bennett led the team with eight rebounds apiece.

Gyasi Cline-Heard led Penn State with 21 points. Tyler Smith and Joe Crispin each had 15, while Brandon Watkins added 11.

Minnesota's next game is Saturday, Feb. 17 at Michigan. The game will be shown on KSTP. Tip-off is at 11:15 a.m.
