GOPHERS WIN FIRST TWO GAMES AT METRODOME SOFTBALL CLASSIC

Braden drove in Minnesota's first six runs in the opening game. She singled with two out in the first inning to score Angie Recknor from third base to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. With one out in the third inning, Braden hit her first home run down the left-field line with two aboard to increase the Gopher advantage to 4-0. Northern Iowa scored in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 4-1, but Braden homered with one on in the fifth inning to give Minnesota a 6-1 cushion. Christine Lindberg hit a pinch-hit three-run home run in the sixth inning and Braden added a run-scoring double to complete the scoring. Piper Marten won her first collegiate start, pitching six innings of one-hit ball and striking out seven batters.
In the second game, Minnesota scored the game's first run with its first two hitters. Tammi Hays and Allie Fisk started the first inning with bunt singles, with Hays advancing to third on a throwing error and scoring when the defense took too long to return the ball to the infield. The Phoenix tied the game in the fourth inning on three Minnesota defensive errors. Minnesota won the game in the eighth inning. Fisk singled, and Recknor reached on her sacrifice attempt courtesy of a Green Bay error. Braden's fly ball to right field advanced both runners, and Hailee Nanchy singled to left field to score Fisk with the game-winning run. Marten pitched the final inning for her second win of the day.
Minnesota continues play in the Metrodome Softball Classic on Friday with games against Western Illinois at 5 p.m. and Louisville at 7 p.m.
