GOPHER SOFTBALL WINS THREE, TAKES THIRD PLACE IN CREIGHTON TOURNEY

8The Minnesota softball team won three games on Saturday at the Creighton Softball Spring Classic, being held at the Johnson County Complex in Shawnee, Kan. The Gophers defeated Buffalo by a score of 8-1, Drake by a count of 3-1, and Missouri-Kansas City with a 3-0 shutout to finish the tournament with a 3-2 record and third place in the six-team field. Minnesota is 15-9-1 for the season.

In the first game of the day, the Gophers scored in five of the seven innings to defeat the Bulls. Minnesota scored three times in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead on a run-scoring single by Anne Thul, a sacrifice fly by Angel Braden and a run-scoring single from Shelly Nichols. Thul and Tammi Hays each had three hits, and Thul scored three runs for Minnesota. Angie Recknor pitched the first six innings and tied her career high with 10 strikeouts in earning her second win of the season.

Against Drake, Minnesota scored three runs in the first three innings and held on to defeat the Bulldogs. The Gophers strung together three singles in the second inning for their first run, with Piper Marten driving in Veronica Roberts. Minnesota added two runs in the third inning on a run-scoing double by Braden and a Drake error. Marten pitched a complete-game four-hitter for her 11th win of the season, and added two hits offensively.

The Golden Gophers scored three runs in the first two innings against Missouri-Kansas City and held on to win their third game of the day. Recknor drove in the game's first run in the first inning on a groundout and Braden scored on a wild pitch to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead. Sara Rustad scored the game's final run in the second inning on a wild pitch. Jessica Green limited the Kangaroos to two hits in five innings to pick up her second win of the season, while Marten finished the shutout for her second save.

Minnesota will next play in the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday, March 24, in West Lafayette, Ind.
