20.Minnesota leads the team competition after the first session at the 2001 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, with 27 points to Iowa's 24.5 and Oklahoma State's 20. Nine of the 10 Golden Gopher wrestlers advanced to tonight's championship bracket second round. The lone Golden Gopher to lose in the first round was fifth-seeded Damion Hahn at 184 pounds who was upset by unseeded Scott Justus of Virginia Tech. Eight of Gold Country's nine victories in the first round came with bonus points via major decision, technical fall or pin.

At 125 pounds, No. 3 seed Leroy Vega, on a quest for his third All- America honor, dropped Eric Dunmire by a 13-5 major decision. Vega finished the match with over two minutes of advantage time. He advances to the second round to face Justin Spates of Missouri. Brett Lawrence, the No. 10 seed at 133 pounds, regained his old form in his first round match, posting a 19-1 (6:40) technical fall on Howard's Derek Butts. He scored four takedowns and four near falls in the win. Lawrence, in search of his first place finish at the NCAAs, moves on to face No. 7 seed Matt Azevedo of Iowa State.

At 141 pounds, No. 7 seed Chad Erikson registered Minnesota's first fall of the tournament, pinning Corey Williams of UNC Greensboro in 1:35. Erikson, competing in his first NCAA Championships, advances to face Mike Castillo of Illinois. Jared Lawrence, the second seed at 149 pounds, began his pursuit of an individual title with a suffocating 13- 4 defeat of VMI's Adam Britt. Lawrence tallied six takedowns and finished with 3:44 of advantage time. He faces Ryan Shapert of Edinboro in the second round.

At 157 pounds, No. 6 seed Luke Becker continued Minnesota's domination, posting an 18-3 (7:00) technical fall on Robby Bell of The Citadel. Becker led throughout and ended with over four minutes of advantage time. He moves on to take on No. 11 seed Leo Urbinelli of Cornell. Sixth-seeded 165-pounder Brad Pike downed UNI's Nate Lawrenz by a 20-7 major decision. Pike, looking for his second All-America honor, battles No. 11 seed Ben Boozer of Edinboro in the second round.

No. 10 seed 174-pounder Jacob Volkmann opened his first national tournament in impressive style, dominating Hofstra's Rob Anspach in a 16-3 major decision. The redshirt freshman tallied a three-point near fall late in the third period and advances to face No. 7 seed Eric Hall of Virginia Tech. Gold Country suffered a major upset at 184 pounds, but Hahn has the opportunity to provide much-needed points in the wrestleback bracket. Hahn trailed for much of his match versus Justus and failed to score a takedown in the final period to advance to the second round. He faces No. 12 seed Shawn Scannell of Rider in the consolation bracket.

At 197 pounds, No. 5 seed Owen Elzen, the winner of a 10-0 pigtail match over Millersville's Greg Eynon, pinned Clarion's Eric Mausser in 5:49. Trailing 3-2 after two periods, Elzen scored a reversal and a two-point near fall before pinning Mausser. He moves on to face Michigan's Joe DeGain, a wrestler he defeated by technical fall in the Big Ten third-place match. Top-seeded heavyweight Garrett Lowney closed out the session one competition with a 5-2 triumph over Bronson Lingamfelter of Brown. Lowney takes on Dawid Rechul of Harvard in the second round

Session two begins tonight at 6:30 p.m. with wrestlebacks and championship second round matches.
