The Gophers travel to Iowa to compete in the Iowa 2001 Rowing Regatta in Iowa City on Sunday, March 25 at 10 a.m.
Golden Gophers Begin Spring Season
The Minnesota Rowing team will begin its spring season this week at the Iowa Invitational in Iowa City on the Coralville Lake Reservoir. Minnesota will be competing against Iowa and Wisconsin in six races. The Gophers are sending two varsity eights, one novice eight and one novice four.
The spring season, different from the fall season, consists of 2000-meter (about 1 1/4 miles) sprints that take about 6-8 minutes, depending on the team. While fall races compete on rivers, are dependent on time and are 5,000-meter races, spring races are usually held on lakes and are finish line wins.
Fall Review
The Golden Gophers won both the Open 8+ and the Open 4+ at the Head of the Mississippi Regatta, Minnesota's debut as a varsity rowing program. Minnesota competed at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, placing sixth in the Club 8+ race. The Golden Gophers also competed at the Head of the Iowa and the Portland Regatta of Champions during the fall season.
The novice team also got off to a good start, placing second in the Novice 8+ and fourth in the Novice 4+ at the Lemon Head Regatta in Bloomington, Ind.
Six student-athletes competed in all four varsity competitions during the fall season: Beth Hornby, Amber Riopel, Angela Hedin, Erin Streff, Nina Palmer and coxswain Libby Sharrow.
Up Next
Minnesota competes at Austin, Texas, on the Colorado River, on Saturday, March 31. The Gophers will have their only home race of the season on April 14 versus Creighton.
