Minnesota got on the board first as Johnny Pohl scored on the rebound. Leading 1-0, the Golden Gophers gave up a power-play goal just seconds before intermission as the two teams entered the lockerroom knotted at one. Minnesota outshot the Black Bears 14-7 in the period.
Minnesota regained the lead as freshman Grant Potulny scored on a deflection off of Erik Westrum's slap shot. Maine rebounded again to tie the game at two and then took a 3-2 in the third period.
The Golden Gophers took control of the game though, as Potulny, the nation's leader in power-play goals, scored with the man-advantage on another deflection. Westrum then gave Minnesota a 4-3 lead as he swatted a puck out of midair past Maine goalie Matt Yeats.
Leading 4-3, Minnesota's Paul Martin was called for slashing with a minute to play. Maine pulled its goalie and as the clock ran down, three Black Bears surrounded goaltender Adam Hauser all alone in front and Michael Schutte scored to tie the game at four.
Hauser stopped 34-of-39 shots in defeat, while the Golden Gophers' season ended at 27-13-2.
