MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD COMPETES AT BALDY CASTILLO INVITATIONAL

sThe University of Minnesota men's track and field team completed day two of the Baldy Castillo Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., with several Golden Gophers competing in the outdoor season-opening event.

Junior Bob Quade placed fifth in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 51.90. Joey Woody and unattached runner, won the race with a 50.30.

Junior Lyndon McDowell finished in fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 7.11 meters. Benson Jones of Washington State captured the long jump title with a 7.40 meter jump.

Two Golden Gophers notched distances in the hammer throw to finish in the top 20. Freshman Lynden Reder heaved the hammer 50.82 meters for 11th place and senior Mark Fahey tallied a 49.52 meter throw for 15th place.

Several other Maroon and Gold athletes competed in field events, but failed to notch a distance. Mike Ehlers and Jesse Madsen competed in the shot put, and McDowell, Jayme Pantekoek and Madsen competed in the javelin.

Over 600 athletes are competing in this weekend's Baldy Castillo Invitational from Arizona State, BYU, Central Arizona College, Dartmouth, Indiana, Kansas State, Manhatten College, Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Northern Iowa, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, UC Santa Barbara and Washington State.

The Baldy Castillo Invitational wraps up Saturday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. and running events at 2 p.m. at Sun Angel Stadium.
