RECKNOR HELPS GOPHERS EARN SPLIT AT PURDUE IN CONFERENCE OPENER

LafAngie Recknor pitched six scoreless innings to lead Minnesota to a 5-0 victory over Purdue in the second half of a Big Ten doubleheader in West Lafayette, Ind. In the opener, Purdue had two five-run innings and defeated the Gophers 10-0 in five innings. Minnesota is 22-10-1, 1-1 in the Big Ten, while Purdue is 24-9-1, 1-1 in the Big Ten.

In the nightcap, Minnesota scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tammi Hays reached on a fielding error and was sacrificed to second base by Veronica Roberts. Hays stole third base and Allie Fisk reached on a walk to put runners on first and third with one out. Shelly Nichols hit a ground ball to third base, and the throw home hit Hays in the back of the helmet, allowing Hays to score and Fisk to reach third base. Hailee Nanchy singled to left field to plate Fisk with the second run. In the sixth inning, Minnesota used a Nanchy single, three Boilermaker errors and a two-run double by Morgan Holden to score three runs. Recknor allowed six hits and no walks while striking out three to win her sixth game of the season.

Purdue broke open the first game with five runs in the third inning. With two on and two out, a dropped fly ball allowed the first run to score. Boilermaker first baseman Heidi Foster followed with a three-run home run to right-center field, and Sara Hall hit a solo home run to left field to complete the five-run outburst. Katie Crabtree hit a two-run double to left-center in the fourth inning to increase the Purdue lead to 7-0, and Jesse Jones singled home Crabtree to make it 8-0. Foster hit her second home run of the day and fourth of the season to complete the scoring.

The Gophers will travel to Indiana to start a two-game series with the Hoosiers on Saturday at 2 p.m. (EST).
