3/4/2001 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track & Field
IndThe University of Minnesota men's track 4x400 meter relay team set a new school record, recorded the third best time in the nation and, more, importantly, automatically qualified for the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The team of Mitch Potter, Adam Steele, Mikael Jakobson and Tom Gerding clocked a 3:06.61 at the NCAA Qualifier in Ames, Iowa.
Gerding also provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the 400m with his time of 46.54.
The 4x400 relay is the only event in which Minnesota has automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships to be held March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark. Several others have provisionally qualified, Gerding and Potter in the 400m, Toby Henkels in the 800m, Will McComb in the 3000m and Marc Johanssen in the high jump. The Gophers will find out on March 5 how many of the provisional qualifiers will be competing.
