POTTER QUALIFIES FOR FINALS AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

ChampionshipUniversity of Minnesota freshman sprinter Mitch Potter qualified for finals in the 400m dash today at the 2001 NCAA Indoor Tack and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Potter ran a time of 46.25, the second fastest time, in prelims to qualify for tomorrow's final.

The two other Minnesota athletes competing today failed to qualify. Senior Tom Gerding ran a 47.94 in his heat of the 400m and Toby Henkels finished the 800m in 1:53.54.

Senior Marc Johannsen will be the first Golden Gopher to compete tomorrow. He begins the high jump at 4:15 p.m. Potter will follow in the 400m finals at 6:55 p.m. The 4x400m relay is the last event of the championships. Minnesota's team of Potter, Adam Steele, Mikael Jakobsson, Gerding and alternate Andy Wohlin will run at 8:10 p.m.
