POTTER AUTOMATICALLY QUALIFIES FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

ofUniversity of Minnesota freshman trackster Mitch Potter automatically qualified for the 2001 NCAA Track and Field Championships with a winning time of 45.40 in the 400-meter dash at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. Potter was Minnesota's top performer in a weekend of great performances by Minnesota's track and field team.

Two other Golden Gophers placed high in the 400m. Senior Tom Gerding provisionally qualified for NCAA Championships with his thrid place time of 45.64. Andy Wohlin performed well with a 14th place finish and a time of 47.43.

Senior Mark Fahey continued his successful season, taking fourth place in the discus with a throw of 177-1. He also placed sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 185-11. Minnesota's two relaysalso placed in the top ten. The distance medley relay took sixth with a time of 9:51.91. The 4x400m relay was just short of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a 3:07.95 to place eighth.
