GOLDEN GOPHER WRESTLER GARRETT LOWNEY WINS U.S. NATIONAL TITLE

Lowney posted four wins in the tournament and qualified for the Senior World Team Trials as the top seed in his weight class. With a win at the Team Trials on June 21-24 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Lowney would qualify for the World Championships in New York City on Sept. 26-29. Lowney will first be competing at the Pan-American Championships in the Dominican Republic on May 17-20.
Lowney, a redshirt freshman for the Golden Gophers, won the 2001 Big Ten heavyweight title and earned his first All-America honor with his third-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Former Golden Gopher wrestlers Brandon Eggum, Tim Hartung and Brent Boeshans also placed at the U.S. Nationals. Eggum (187.25 pounds) and Hartung (213.75 pounds) competed in the Freestyle Nationals and both took fourth place in their respective weight class. Boeshans captured seventh place at 286 pounds in Greco-Roman. Current Golden Gopher Ryan Lewis also competed at the Freestyle Nationals at 127.75 pounds, going 1-1.
