FAHEY WINS DISCUS TO LEAD GOLDEN GOPHERS AT TEXAS TEAM

MiSenior Mark Fahey won the discus with a throw of 177-11 at the Texas Team Invitational in Austin, Texas this weekend. Fahey was the top finisher for Minnesota who finished fifth in the team standings.
The Golden Gophers had 13 people finish in the top ten in nine events. Brian Meyer and Zach Edmonson finished second and seventh, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Freshman Martin Robeck continued his success from the indoor season and placed fourth in the 1500m with a career-best time of 3:53.87. Senior Bob Quade took third among stiff competition in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.44. Steve Slattery and Jayme Pantekoek placed ninth and tenth in the pole vault, both with vaults of 15-5. Scott Berggren and Lyndon McDowell also placed right after one another in the high jump with equal jumps of 6-6.
Several athletes also competed in more than one event. In addition to winning the discus, Fahey took third in the hammer with a toss of 187-6. Mike Ehlers took fourth in the shot out and tenth in the discus. Lynden Reder placed fourth in the hammer and ninth in the discus. Senior Ben Meyer also finished in the top of the pack in the hammer with a toss of 170-7 to take fifth. Lyndon McDowell was the other Golden Gophers competing in multiple events. In addition to high jump, McDowell took ninth in the long jump with a leap of 21-10 1/4.
That Golden Gophers continue the outdoor season next weekend at the Drake Relays, one of the largest outdoor meets in the country.
