#12 IOWA EDGES GOPHERS IN BIG TEN SOFTBALL

The 12th-ranked Iowa softball team made two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning stand up and defeated Minnesota, 2-1, in Big Ten softball action at Pearl Field. Iowa remains in second place in the Big Ten with a 6-1 record and improves to 29-7 overall, while Minnesota falls to 23-14-1, 2-5 in the Big Ten.

Minnesota took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Shelly Nichols led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Morgan Holden. Nichols moved to third on a sacrifice by Christine Lindberg and scored on a wild pitch by Iowa pitcher Kristi Hanks. Iowa took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning with two runs. Hawkeye second baseman Christina Schmaltz doubled home the first run, and a two-out single by shortstop Kristin Johnson scored Amber Morrow from second base.

Iowa pitcher Kristi Hanks raised her record to 23-4, pitching a two-hitter and striking out seven batters. Minnesota had two singles in the game from Tammi Hays and Anne Thul. Minnesota hurler Angie Recknor dropped to 6-5, allowing two runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Minnesota concludes its Big Ten weekend with a single game against the Hawkeyes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
