#12 HAWKEYES DEFEAT GOPHERS IN EIGHT INNINGS, 2-0

anThe 12th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning and defeated Minnesota, 2-0, in Big Ten softball action Sunday at Pearl Field. Iowa retains second place in the Big Ten and improves to 30-7, 7-1 in the league, while Minnesota loses its fourth game in a row and falls to 23-15-1, 2-6 in Big Ten play.

Iowa had runners on in each of the first seven innings, but Minnesota's pitching duo of Angie Recknor and Piper Marten combined to leave 11 Hawkeyes on base in the first seven innings. Minnesota had the winning run at third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but failed to score. The Hawkeyes used three Minnesota errors and two hits to score their two unearned runs off of Recknor in the eighth inning.

Hawkeye pitcher Kristi Hanks retired the five batters she faced and improved to 24-4, 6-1 in the Big Ten. Recknor pitched six innings and took the loss, falling to 6-6, 1-3 in the Big Ten. Recknor had two of Minnesota's four hits on offense, while Anne Thul and Hailee Nanchy each had singles for Minnesota. Kristin Johnson had three hits to lead a 10-hit Iowa attack.

After playing 32 consecutive games out of the state of Minnesota, the Gophers return home to Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, where Minnesota will play 18 of its final 22 regular-season games. The Gophers open their home season Wednesday at 4 p.m. with a non-conference doubleheader against Wisconsin-Green Bay.
