WOMEN'S TENNIS EARNS BIG TEN WIN AT PURDUE

The women's tennis team defeated Purdue 4-3 and improved their record to 11-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten. The Gophers won the doubles point by winning two of the three matches and won three of the six singles matches.

In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Valerie Vladea and Michaela Havelkova got their 12th win of the season by defeating Missy Wright and Melissa Woods 9-8. The No. 3 pair of Amy Thomas and Brandi Watts also won their match by defeating Erika Quebe and Gretchen Haynor 9-7. That brings the pair to 11-4 for the season. Jennifer Howard and Tammy Wang lost 8-3 in the No. 2 spot to Purdue's Lynsey Fick and Melissa Iqbal.

On the singles side, Minnesota's three points came at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 positions. After losing the first set, Vladea came from behind to beat Quebe 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 position. Vladea has now won seven of her last eight matches and is 9-6 on the season. At No. 3, Havelkova got the win over Woods in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Wang also got the win in straight sets while playing the No. 4 position. She defeated Haynor 6-4, 6-1. Wang's record improved to 11-4 for the season.

The Gophers are at home for the next two matches. They host Northwestern on Friday, April 13 followed by Illinois on Sunday, April 15. Both are conference matches.
