WOMEN GOPHERS LEAD BIG TEN AFTER FIRST DAY

theThe Minnesota women's track and field team lead the 2001 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships after the first day of competition with a team score of 33.25 points. Purdue is close behind the Gophers with 30 points.

Leading the Gophers was senior Corinne Nimtz who placed second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:00.16, a provisional qualifying mark. Victoria Moses also racked up two points for Minnesota in the events by finishing seventh, running 36:24.97.

Scoring 18 points of Minnesota's points were the women's throwers in the hammer competition. Senior Brenda Meyer threw a personal-best 186-feet, 10-inches to claim second in the event, followed by Aubrey Schmitt who took third (183-2) and Angie Hill who took fifth (170-6).

Sophomore Erica Findlay marked five points in the pole vault with a fourth place vault of 12-feet, 2-inches. Monica Stearns tied for eighth in the event with a vault of 11-2 Ľ.

The Gophers continue to compete at the Big Ten championships in Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20.
