MINNESOTA MEN WIN 4X400 RELAY, FINISH FOURTH OVERALL

CThe University of Minnesota men's track and field team set four new school records, automatically qualified one and provisionally qualified for NCAA Championships at the 2001 Big Ten Track and Field Championships. Tom Gerding set new school records in the 200 and 400-meter dashes, provisionally qualified in the 200m and automatically qualified in the 400m. Mikael Jakobsson set a new school record in the 400m hurdles and provisionally qualified. Jakobsson and Gerding were both on the 4x400m relay team that was Minnesota's only Big Ten Champion that also set a new school record and provisionally qualified for NCAAS.

The Golden Gopher's opened the final day of competition at the 2001 Big Ten Track and Field Championships with a second-place finish in the 4x100m relay. Matt Taylor, Steve Burkholder, Ben Taylor and Tom Gerding combined for a season-best time of 40.33 seconds. They were runner-up to Iowa's 40.14.

Less than an hour later, Gerding followed up with another runner-up performance in the 400m dash. He ran an NCAA automatic qualifying and school record time of 45.37. Andy Wohlin followed in fourth with his career-best time of 46.89. Adam Steele added more points for Minnesota with a seventh place finish and a 47.56.

Matt Taylor followed up his outstanding performance in the relay with a sixth place finish in the 100m dash. His time of 10.57 is a new career-best. Steve Burkholder finished right with Taylor at 10.57, his best time of the season.

Minnesota added several more points with strong finishes by Jason Owen and Toby Henkels in the 800m. Owen showed a tremendous kick in the last 200m to move from sixth and finish in third with a 1:48.60. Henkels finished fifth with a 1:49.96.

Mikael Jakobsson took fifth for Minnesota in the 400m hurdles with a NCAA provisional and school record time of 50.98.

Tom Gerding had his third runner-up finish of the championships in the 200m, while Matt Taylor finished sixth.

The 4x400m relay wrapped up the championship with their school record time of 3:05.07.
