OLSON TO BE HONORED BY LYNX ON SATURDAY

5/30/2001 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

Minnesota senior associate athletics director Donna Olson will be honored by the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday, June 2, as part of the Honoring Our Legacy celebration. The ceremony will take place prior to the Lynx regular-season home opener against the Phoenix Mercury at 7 p.m. at Target Center.

Olson has worked in collegiate athletics for 30 years, including the last 16 at Minnesota. During her tenure at Minnesota, she oversaw the day-to-day operations of 12 varsity sports, event management, and the medical and performance enhancement areas. Olson has received several honors over the years. Most recently, she was given a Special Merit Award at the state of Minnesota's 2000 National Girls and Women in Sports Day. In October, 1999, she was enshrined with special recognition into the Montclair State College Athletic Hall of Fame. Olson was involved in the 1996 Olympic Games, serving on the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games as a sport manager for men's and women's basketball. She has also served on the NCAA Olympic Liaison Committee for the last two years.

This is the third year the Lynx have honored people who have made significant contributions to women's athletics in the State of Minnesota. These honorees make a difference in the lives of sportswomen both on and off the field. Past honorees with ties to the University of Minnesota Women's Athletics Department include athletics director Chris Voelz, head swimming coach Jean Freeman, co-strength and conditioning coaches Amy Scott and Sara Wiley, and basketball player Carol Ann Shudlick. Included in this year's class of seven honorees are Olson and Lea (Bergin) Olson, a Golden Gopher basketball player who is employed by the Minnesota Timberwolves/Lynx and is a sideline reporter for ESPN's coverage of the WNBA.
