Bell spent one year as the head women's coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he compiled a record of 7-10-0. His IUP squad was honored for earning the third-best grade-point-average (3.43) among NCAA Division II teams during the 2000 season.
"Eric will bring a breath of knowledge and fresh ideas to our soccer program," said Wickstrand. "He has great experience as an assistant, as well as a head coach, and we're looking forward to working with him."
Prior to IUP, Bell was the assistant coach with both the men's and women's teams at Ashland University (Ohio). He helped the Ashland women's team to the NCAA Division II national semifinals in 1998 and to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles in 1997,'98 and '99.
Bell owns a United States Soccer Federation "C" License and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He was involved in the Pennsylvania Olympic Development Program, serving as the state team head coach for one year.
Bell graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Wooster (Ohio) in 1992 and earned a mater's degree from Ashland.
Bell replaces Richard Drake, who accepted an assistant coaching position at Marshall University (W.Va.).
The Gophers finished the 2000 season, Wickstrand's first as head coach, with an 8-10-1 record.
