sMarsha Frese has been named as an assistant women's basketball coach at the University of Minnesota, Golden Gopher head women's basketball coach Brenda Oldfield announced today. Frese is the younger sister of Oldfield, who was hired as the new Gopher head coach last week.

Frese was a member of Oldfield's Ball State University staff for two seasons. She served as the Cardinals' recruiting coordinator and helped Ball State compile a 35-22 record, including a school-record 19-9 mark last season. Under her direction, Ball State ranked eighth in the nation in 2000-01 with 7.3 three-point field goals made per game.

"I'm excited to have Marsha join me at Minnesota," said Oldfield. "We work so well together and there's obviously trust and loyalty between us. I have great confidence in her as a recruiting coordinator and a perimeter coach. She will be a huge asset to our program as we strive to bring the best home-state Minnesota and Midwest players into our program."

Before going to Ball State, Frese spent three years as the sports anchor at KALB-TV in Alexandria, La. She has experience as a basketball color analyst for both television and radio broadcasts.

Frese graduated from Rice University in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in communications. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Owls. Prior to her collegiate playing career, Frese was named the 1990 Miss Iowa Basketball by USA Today and Gatorade Circle of Champions. She still ranks among Iowa's all-time leading high school scorers in the five- player game.
