Walz will concentrate on game management, while assisting in recruiting, scouting and coaching of the post players.
"Jeff is an excellent choice to complete our coaching staff here at Minnesota," said Oldfield, who was hired in June. "As a staff, I believe we complement each others strengths well and will turn this program into a winner."
Before accepting the position with the Golden Gophers, Walz spent four years as an assistant coach at Nebraska. During his tenure at Nebraska, the Cornhuskers compiled a 74-53 record, notched a pair of 20-plus win seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Walz saw his coaching responsibilities increase with each year of experience. In his final season with the Huskers, Walz coordinated the Nebraska recruiting efforts and was in charge of conducting individual development workouts, player development and opponent scouting.
Walz began his coaching career at Western Kentucky University, spending one season as assistant women's basketball coach and another as the squad's administrative assistant. He has also served two seasons as a girls' AAU head coach in Kentucky.
Walz, a native of St. Thomas, Ky., attended Northern Kentucky University on a full athletic scholarship and played basketball for two seasons for the Norse. He earned bachelor's degrees in secondary education and business in 1995. He completed his master's degree in education at Western Kentucky in 2000.
The Gopher women's basketball coaching staff under Brenda Oldfield is now complete. Walz joins Marsha Frese and Erica Floyd as assistant coaches.
