sThe 2001 edition of University of Minnesota football kicks off its preseason camp Wednesday, Aug. 8, with Media Day at the Gibson-Nagurski Football Complex. The Golden Gophers will be in search of a school record third consecutive bowl appearance during the 2001 campaign.

Freshman football players report to camp Sunday, Aug. 5, with the first freshman practice taking place on Monday. The Maroon and Gold's first full-team practice is Thursday, Aug. 9. Minnesota begins its 2001 season Thursday, Aug. 30, at the University of Toledo.

Minnesota is one of just four Big Ten teams to earn bowl bids the past two years. To make it to a third-straight bowl game, the Golden Gophers will have to overcome the loss of 24 letterwinners, including two starters on offense and nine on defense.

"As we enter the 2001 season, the challenges that face us are almost the exact opposite of what faced us in 2000," said Head Coach Glen Mason. "We return most of our offensive starters, as we did on defense in 2000, and we have a lot of key players to replace on defense, as we did on offense in 2000. I am hopeful that the young players on defense will respond to the challenge the same way our offensive players did a year ago."
