#15 GOPHER VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS VIRGINIA, IMPROVES TO 2-1

15th-rankeCassie Busse had a career-high 14 kills and Stephanie Hagen had a career-high seven aces as 15th-ranked Minnesota swept Virginia, 30-15, 30-19, 30-25, in the last match of the Jefferson Cup Invitational. The Golden Gophers (2-1) finish second in the four-team tournament behind 10th-ranked Stanford, while the host Cavaliers (1-2) take third place.

Hagen and setter Lindsey Berg were named to the all-tournament team. Hagen, who led Minnesota with 21 kills in Friday's win over Radford, added seven kills at a .357 hitting percentage against Virginia to complement her seven aces. Berg led Minnesota to a .381 team hitting percentage against Virginia with 33 assists and topped the Gophers with 11 digs.

Minnesota was never threatened in the first game, scoring the first four points on Hagen's serve and cruising to a 30-15 victory. The Gophers hit .583 with just two hitting errors in the first game and limited Virginia to a .100 hitting percentage. The second game was similar to the first, as Minnesota jumped out to a 9-3 lead and never led by less than four points for the remainder of the game. The third game was much closer than the first two, but Minnesota held the Cavaliers without a point on serve for 11 rotations, allowing Minnesota to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 21-16 lead. Virginia moved to within 25-24, but kills by Hagen and Berg gave Minnesota 27 points, and Berg served the final three points to end the match.

For the second straight match, Kathy Tilson accumulated double-figure kills, as she contributed 10 kills at a .563 hitting percentage. Erin Martin also had double-figure kills for the second time in three matches, earning 10 kills at a .316 hitting percentage. The Gophers served 11 service aces in the match, giving them 22 service aces against 21 service errors for the weekend. Minnesota also had a substantial advantage on defense, outdigging the Cavaliers, 43-23.

Minnesota returns to the Sports Pavilion on Wednesday to host Marquette at 7 p.m.
