ST. MARY'S (CALIF.) HAND GOPHERS THIRD STRAIGHT SHUTOUT

The University of Minnesota women's soccer team was defeated 2-0 by St. Mary's of Cal.
St. Mary's got on top early and never let go of the lead. Within 20 minutes of the first half, the Gaels got on the board with a goal scored by Sarah Takekawa. In the second half, the Gaels sealed the game on a goal scored by Jennifer Barbera at the 78-minute mark.
St. Mary's outshot the Gophers, 19-6, and hit three posts during the match. Julie Eibensteiner managed five saves for Minnesota, while Gael goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery had three.
Minnesota returns to the friendly confines of Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium for their home opener Friday, Sept. 14, against Iowa State, at 7 p.m.
