JACK ROACH NAMED WOMEN'S INTERIM TENNIS COACH
The University of Minnesota has announced that Jack Roach will be the interim head coach for the women's tennis team, starting immediately. The search for a new head coach is underway. Roach takes over for Martin Novak, who accepted the women's head coach position at the University of Maryland.
Roach was the women's head coach at Minnesota from 1983-87 when he led the Gophers to a 60-45 overall record during his four seasons. Throughout his time here, the Gophers finished fourth in conference play each year and compiled a 27-23 record in Big Ten play.
Before his first stint at Minnesota, Roach worked as a tennis professional and manager at several area tennis and country clubs. He also handled head coaching duties at Edison High School in Minneapolis and Kellogg High School in St. Paul. During the summers, he worked as a teaching pro at Interlachen Country Club.
In 1982, Roach was inducted into the Minnesota Tennis Hall of Fame. He was named Outstanding Pro of the Year in 1977 by the Northwest Professional Tennis Association for his teaching. He also served as the head coach of the 1967 United States team at the Pan-Am games.
More recently, Roach was the director of tennis for the Northwest Racquet Clubs and also the head tennis pro at the 98th Street Athletic Club in Bloomington. He recently returned to the Interlachen Country Club, where he has once again been a teaching professional for the past three seasons.
Roach earned a teaching degree in social studies and physical education from Macalester College in 1957 where he also played tennis at the intercollegiate level. He went on to gain a master's degree from St. Cloud State University in 1963.
