THREE GOPHERS ADVANCE IN LADY REBELS TENNIS TOURNAMENT
The University of Minnesota wrapped up the first day of competition at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev., after gaining three singles wins and one doubles win. Four teams competed in the tournament that features three singles flights and three doubles flights.
Valerie Vladea (Kitchener, Ontario/Burlington Central) defeated Dominika Olszewska of Oklahoma State. Vladea won by scores of 6-2, 6-3, and is scheduled to face senior Tami Botts of Louisiana State University in Flight One singles.
Brandi Watts (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) advanced to second round action of Flight Two. Watts easily defeated Ashleigh Dolman from Oklahoma State 6-1, 6-0. Watts will be paired up against UNLV's Gyorgyi Zairos.
In Flight Three singles, Andrea Rose (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Handsworth) captured another win for the Gophers as she beat LSU's Perri Budd 6-1, 6-4. Rose will take on Amy Hadziosmanovic from UNLV.
All three singles matches are set for 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
As for the doubles side, Minnesota earned its lone win from Watts and Amy Thomas (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) in Flight Two competition. They won their match by a score of 8-5 over Botts/Budd out of LSU.
Golden Gopher Michaela Havelkova (Liberec, Czech Republic/Gymnazium F.X. Saldy) won her first set 7-5 over LSU's Amanda Mang, but was forced to retire in the second set due to an injury.
Minnesota faces teams from Louisiana State, Oklahoma State, and host UNLV. Second-round action will be Saturday with finals scheduled for Sunday.

(Flight Three-Round One) Perry/Rose lost to Chong/Hadziosmanovic, UNLV, 9-7.
