In the first period, the Beavers came out strong, scoring two goals within 30 seconds of each other to take the early 2-0 lead. Lisa Peters scored a power-play goal 29 seconds into the game with assists going to Amber Fryklund and Caesare Stimson. The Beavers scored again at the 59 mark on an unassisted goal from Guylaine Hache.
Minnesota and Bemidji State went scoreless in the second period as the Beavers lead held steady at 2-0 going into the third. The Golden Gophers started the comeback at 3:16 of the third as Sarma Pone scored her third goal of the year to cut the deficit in half 2-1. Minnesota pulled its goalie with 1:14 remaining in the third period. The exta person on the ice proved to be beneficial as the Gophers scored at 18:55 by Tracy Engstrom assisted by Laura Slominski and Ronda Curtin. The Gophers would send the game into overtime, their eighth game this season and third in a row.
With 56 seconds into the overtime period, Minnesota's La Toya Clarke scored her fifth goal of the season with the assists going to Kristy Oonincx and Cecilia Retelle to gain the win.
"After struggling to score for two periods, it was great to put three in late in the game," head coach Laura Halldorson said. "It was rewarding to see the hard work pay off in overtime." The Gophers next action will be Friday and Saturday night as the two top teams in the nation go head-to-head at Mariucci Arena. Minnesota (No. 2) hosts Minnesota-Duluth (No.1) Jan. 18 and 19 at 7:05 p.m.
