MINNESOTA MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING DOMINATE IN HAWAII

9The sixth-ranked University of Minnesota swimming and diving team beat The University of Hawaii and UNLV in a dual meet Saturday afternoon. The Golden Gophers beat Hawaii 87-49, while downing UNLV 94-45.

The Golden Gophers started off in impressive fashion by claiming the top two spots in the 400-yard medley relay. Todd Smolinski, Jeff Hackler, Chad Krastins< /a> and Allen Ong won with a time of 3:19.51, while Ben Bartell, Dov Malnik, Bjoern Lundin and Brian Gettelfinger placed second with a time of 3:22.88.

The Minnesota backstrokers dominated, taking the top five spots in the 100-yard competition and taking the top four spots in the 200-yard Junior Todd Smolinski won both events with a time of 48.37 and 1:49.82, respectively.

The Gophers swept the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes taking the top three spots in 100-yard and the top four in the 200-yard. Winning both of the events was junior Jeff Hackler with a time of 56.39 and 2:02.55, respectively.

Ong and Justin Mortimer</ a> were both double event winners. Ong claimed the 50-yard (20.54) and 100-yard (45.06) freestyles, while Mortimer won the 500-yard (4.32.51) and 1000-yard freestyles (9:20.15).

Chad Krastins was also an individual champion claiming the 100-yard butterfly (48.72).

The Gophers will next be in action when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes and Indiana January 26 at 1 p.m.
