Minnesota got on the board first as a trio of freshmen gave the Golden Gophers the lead. Keith Ballard brought the puck into the zone but his shot sailed wide of the net. Jake Fleming collected the puck behind the goal and centered it to Barry Tallackson who buried it. The 1-0 lead would hold until the second period.
The Seawolves knotted the game at one as freshman John Hopson got by Ballard and slid the puck past Adam Hauser. The second period ended with a slew of penalties including Alaska's Ryan Young's five-minute major for checking from behind.
In the third period, senior captain John Pohl scored a pair of power-play goals less than four minutes apart to give the Golden Gophers some breathing room. Less than a minute later, the Seawolves Petr Chytka was called for high-sticking at 4:56. Anchorage pulled to within a goal as Dallas Steward scored shorthanded on a breakaway.
The lead would hold until the final minute. With UAA goalie Kevin Reiter on the bench and the puck in the corner of the Gopher zone. Gregg Zaporzan managed to center the puck and Cygan slapped it past Hauser with one second remaining on the clock.
The teams skated to the tie in overtime as each team managed just one shot on goal.
