First-year goalie Jody Horak upped her record to 9-0-2 with 41 saves, while La Toya Clarke, Tracy Engstrom and Kristy Oonincx each provided a goal as the Golden Gophers ran their unbeaten streak to 18 games. Tonight marked the second consecutive game that a Minnesota goalie posted 40 or more saves with Brenda Reinen posting 42 in last night's 1-0.
We just swept a very talented UMD hockey team," Minnesota head coach Laura Halldorson said. "It took a great deal of hard work and team play, and I'm so proud of all of my players."
The Golden Gophers took the early 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Engstrom just 1 minute and 34 seconds into the first period. It was Engstrom's 10th goal of the season. The Bulldogs replied with torrid pressure placing 17 shots on goal during the first period, with UMD's Erika Holst managing to sneak the puck by Horak at the 7:51 mark.
In the second period, the Gophers returned the favor and applied constant pressure on Bulldog goalie Tuula Puputti with 12 shots on goal, holding UMD to just nine. Clarke extended Gold Country's lead to 2-1 with her sixth goal of the season 11:30 into the second period with the assist going to Oonincx and Jerilyn Glenn.
Oonincx provided an insurance goal with 11:45 remaining in the contest. It was Oonincx's ninth goal of the season.
Minnesota hosts for the second weekend in a row in a nonconference series against Findlay. The games are set for a 2:05 p.m. start. It will be the first meeting between the two schools.
