MINNESOTA LEAVES ANCHORAGE WITH THREE POINTS AFTER 5-2 WIN

1/20/2002 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

dJeff Taffe had two goals and an assist while rookie Travis Weber stopped 20 of 22 shots as Minnesota defeated Alaska Anchorage 5-2 on Saturday night. The Golden Gophers improve to 17-4-4 on the year and host top-ranked Denver next weekend at Mariucci Arena.

The Seawolves got on the board first as Vladimir Novak dug the puck out of a group and beat Weber with a backhand. The lead wouldn't last as Taffe connected right in front of UAA goalie Chris King.

Tied at one entering the second, Minnesota took control of the game. Taffe passed cross ice to Paul Martin who waited and then dished to Troy Riddle in front of King. Riddle converted and the Golden Gophers would never relinquish the lead. Less than two minutes later, Grant Potulny scored on the rebound at 9:28.

Alaska Anchorage attempted to rally for the second straight night as Corey Hessler opened the scoring in the third period with his slapshot from the blueline. Minnesota's one-goal lead would last until the final four minutes of the game. Johnny Pohl won a faceoff in the Seawolf zone. Jake Fleming tipped it back to Martin who sent a soft shot towards the goal that King could not stop. The goal gave Minnesota some breathing room. Taffe put the game away at 19:08 with his empty net goal from center ice.
