DENVER DEFEATS GOLDEN GOPHERS 3-1 AT MARIUCCI ARENA

MinneThe Golden Gopher men's hockey team surrendered two short-handed goals and couldn't seem to find the back of the net, as they fell 3-1 to the top-ranked Pioneers Friday night at Mariucci Arena. Minnesota came out in a flurry in the first period, putting the first six shots on goal; but goaltender Wade Dubielewicz was impenetrable, making some incredible saves to blank the Maroon and Gold after one period. Defenseman Ryan Caldwell broke the scoreless tie in the second with his third goal of the season. Eight minutes later, senior Pat O'Leary finally broke through the Dubielewicz wall and tied the game with his 13th career tally. O'Leary's tip-in off a Paul Martin shot gave Minnesota some renewed life. The celebration was short-lived, however, as Max Bull broke away and beat senior goaltender Adam Hauser for a short-handed goal with just 12 seconds remaining in the period. Denver extended the lead immediately in the third with yet another short-handed goal, this time by Greg Keith, and Minnesota could not recover. Minnesota, third in the WCHA, fell to 9-5-3 in conference play, while Dever improved to 16-1-0. The Golden Gophers will try to rebound Saturday night, as the two teams will meet for the final time in the regular season.
