GOLDEN GOPHERS FINISH THIRD AT THE MINNESOTA COURT CLASSIC

The Gophers fell behind early with two losses in doubles competition, as Marquette gained a point. Sophomore Brandi Watts and first-year Kandis Batiste defeated Marquette's Alexandra Stankovic and Sommer La Valley, 8-3 in the lone doubles win.
Minnesota's Michaela Havelkova won the No. 1 singles, taking the match to three sets against Genevieve Charron. Havelkova lost the first set 6-7 (8), but came back to win 6-4, 6-4. Jennifer Howard won 6-4, 6- 4 over Annabelle Espinosa, while Andrea Rose won 6-4, 7-6 (4) against Marquette's Veronica Garcia Briseno in the No. 3 singles. First year Kelly Perry gained a win in the No. 5 singles, defeating La Valley 6-1, 6-2 and Batiste won 7-5, 6-3 over Stankovic en route to the 5-2 win.
Minnesota returns to action next weekend as the team travels Iowa State Feb. 1 for a 4:00 p.m. match, followed by Drake on Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m.
