GOLDEN GOPHER WRESTLERS SHUTOUT NO. 13 MICHIGAN STATE 37-0

anThe top-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team shutout No. 13 Michigan State 37-0 Sunday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich., winning two bouts by major decision, and one each by technical fall and pin. With the victory, the Golden Gophers improved to 13-0 overall (2-0 Big Ten) and pushed their school-record dual meet winning streak to 27 duals.

The meet began at 165 pounds with 14th-ranked John Hardy's 15-10 win over Anton Hall. It was Hardy's first dual meet win since early December. He moved his record to 15-6 overall (3-3 duals). Seventh-ranked Jacob Volkmann rebounded from his loss to Michigan's top-ranked Otto Olson with a 5-2 win over Rashad Evans in the 174-pound match.

At 184 pounds, No. 5 Damion Hahn gave Minnesota its first major decision with his 13-4 triumph over Nate Mesyn. Hahn moved his record to 20-7 overall. The Golden Gophers tacked on four more team points at 197 as third-ranked Owen Elzen posted an 8-0 major decision on No. 16 Joh Wechter. Elzen is 23-2 overall and 13-0 in duals this season. The string of bonus points continued at heavyweight as fifth-ranked Garret Lowney pinned Mike Keenan in 1:41 to give Minnesota six team points and a suffocating 20-0 lead.

Moving to the lower weights proved no easier for the Spartans as Minnesota maintained the shutout. At 125 pounds, second-ranked Leroy Vega downed fellow All-American, No. 20 Chris Williams 8-3. Vega improved to 22-2 overall (12-1 duals) with the win. Top-ranked Ryan Lewis won again at 133 pounds to remain undefeated at 19-0, notching a 19-2 technical fall on Scott Pushman. Lewis is now 8-0 in duals this season.

At 141 pounds, Trent Hatlevig wrestled in place of starter Chad Erikson and did not disappoint, downing Charlie Sageman 4-2. The Golden Gophers closed out the meet with decisions over two ranked MSU wrestlers. First, at 149 pounds, third-ranked Jared Lawrence dropped No. 11 Karl Nadolsky 4-1 to move to 22-1 overall on the season. Then, at 157 pounds, third-ranked Luke Becker closed out the rout with his 7-0 win over No. 7 Gray Maynard.

No. 1 Minnesota and arch rival No. 3 Iowa (winner over No. 2 Ohio State on Friday) battle Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis in BORDER BRAWL I. The most anticipated dual meet of the season is an attempt by the Golden Gophers to break the all-time NCAA dual meet attendance record of 15,291, set on Feb. 22, 1992 when Iowa defeated Iowa State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
