Golden Gopher Soccer Ties Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2-2

The University of Minnesota women's soccer team registered its first tie match of the season today, finishing knotted at 2-2 versus Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a non-conference game in Milwaukee, Wis. With the win, the Golden Gophers stop a two-game losing streak and move to 6-6-1 overall (1-5-0 Big Ten). The Maroon and Gold now has a six-match unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents.
The Panthers struck first at 17:58 pm Erin Shaughnessy's first goal of the season, coming 18 yards out on a one-on-one spin move to beat goalkeeper M arni Prall, starting her first game as a Golden Gopher. Midfielder Maggie Suminski was credited with the lone assist. Minnesota tied the game at one in the 37th minute on midfielder L aura Hoppe's first goal and point in the Maroon and Gold. Using an assist from forward R achael Roth, Hoppe lofted the ball from 25 yards out into the back corner. The first half came to a close with the shots tied at four.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee regained the lead in the 72nd minute as Elizabeth Chudy headed in a Suminski free kick from seven yards away. The Golden Gophers knotted the match at two, however, on Roth's team- and Big Ten-leading 10th goal of the season. Using an assist from a Hilary Stowell free kick, Roth used a header from five yards out to beat UWM goalkeeper Molly Schneider. Roth's 10 goals is the best season total by a Golden Gopher since Nicole Lee scored 17 during the 1998 season. With her game-tying marker, Roth moved into a tie for eighth place with Megan Johnson (1996-99) on Minnesota's career goals list at 18.
The Panthers and Golden Gopher played two scoreless overtimes with Minnesota out-shooting UWM 4-3 in the extra sessions. For the match, the teams were knotted at 13 shots apiece. Prall combined with K elly Kraft in the tie game, stopping five Panther shots. The Golden Gophers led in the foul column, out-pacing UWM 31-20.
Minnesota continues its road trip this weekend with a Big Ten match-up against Northwestern on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. in Evanston, Ill.
