No. 6 Minnesota Drops Purdue 3-0

The sixth-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (18-2, 5-0) dropped Purdue (9-8, 0-5) by scores of 30-21, 30, 21, 30-26 on Friday, Oct. 11 at the Sports Pavilion. The Golden Gophers have now won seven straight against Purdue. Minnesota has won its last 11 matches.

"We obviously got off to a slow start but we began to smooth things out in the first game," said Minnesota head coach Mike Hebert. "We played with a different line-up and it worked out well for us. We got our hitting percentage above .300 and it was another great night for us."

Minnesota claimed game one against Purdue 30-21. With the score 21- 20, the Golden Gophers used a 9-1 run to take game one. Minnesota was paced by Erin Martin (Ames, IA) with seven kills and six digs. Cassie Busse (Prior Lake, Minn.) also chipped in six kills while Lindsey Vander Well (Prinsburg, Minn.) added 16 assists. The Golden Gophers hit .317 while using stingy defense to keep Purdue at a .079 mark. Minnesota also out blocked Purdue 5-2.

The Golden Gophers took a 2-0 lead in the match by taking game two 30- 21 in similar form. With the score 25-9 Minnesota used a 6-2 run to take the game. The Golden Gophers led the entire game and hit an impressive .400 while Purdue hit just .132. Busse climbed to a double double with 11 kills and 10 digs.

In game three, Minnesota claimed the match winning 30-26. The Boilermakers tied the score at 15 with a 4-1 run. The Golden Gophers fought back with a 6-2 run to regain the lead at 21-17. Busse scored two consecutive kills with the score 28-26 to seal the victory for Minnesota.

The Golden Gophers boasted three players with double figure kills led by Martin's game high 19. Busse and Jessica Byrnes</ a> (Minnetonka, Minn.) added 16 and 11 kills respectively. Lisa Reinhart (White Bear Lake, Minn.) provided 10 digs for the match while Vander Well dropped in 45 assists. As a team, Minnesota hit .313 and out-killed Purdue 58- 34 and out-assisted them 50-33. Kim McConaha led the Boilermakers with 12 kills and two service aces.

Minnesota will continue Big Ten Conference play hosting Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 12. The match will begin at 7 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
