No. 9 Minnesota Volleyball Defeats Iowa 3-1

Minnesota jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the first game 30-27. The Golden Gophers trailed 25-22, but paced by two service aces from Cassie Busse (Prior Lake, Minn.) they rallied to score eight of the final 10 points to win the first game. Erin Martin (Ames, Iowa) led the way with five kills in a game that featured 11 ties.
Iowa tied the match up at 1-1 winning the second game 30-23. The Hawkeyes opened the game up with the score at 17-14, by scoring 12 of the 15 points to go up 29-17. Minnesota fought off six game points before Iowa closed out the game 30-23.
In game three Iowa jumped out to an 18-12 lead, but Minnesota went on a 6-0 run paced by three kills from Amanda Cipperly (Andover, Minn.) to tie the score at 18. The Golden Gophers grabbed their first lead at 21-20, and would not trail the rest of the game as they took game three 30-27 to go up 2-1 in the match. Martin had nine kills to account for one third of the team’s 27 in game three. The 27 kills is the most the Golden Gophers have recorded in a game this season.
The Golden Gophers closed out the match winning game four 31-29. Iowa led 20-17, but Minnesota went on a 5-0 run to go up 22-20. Minnesota led 27-24, but Iowa tied the score at 27, 28 and 29 before the Golden Gophers closed out the game at 31-29.
Martin had a career-high 25 kills and eight digs on the night. Busse registered her fourth double-double of the season with 13 kills and a career-high 18 digs. Jessica Byrnes (Minnetonka, Minn.) had 16 kills, while Cipperly had a season-high 10 kills. Paula Gentil (Forteleaza Ceara’, Brazil) tied a career-high with 27 digs on the night, while Lindsey Vander Well (Prinsburg, Minn.) had a career-high 74 assists and 10 digs. The 74 assists tied for the most assists in school history in a four-game match by a Golden Gopher setter.
Minnesota had 102 digs to 87 for Iowa. The Golden Gophers also had 80 kills to the Hawkeyes 61. Minnesota is now 10-0 away from the Sports Pavilion this season.
Iowa was led by Renee Hill who had 19 kills and 14 digs on the night.
Minnesota will host No. 8 Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in a battle of the top two teams in the Big Ten standings. That match will be broadcast on ESPN 2 on Oct. 20 at 12 p.m.
